Like other informal settlements in Nairobi, Kibera and Mathare slums are characterised by high population density, unplanned and crowded housing, and a lack of infrastructure.

Most roads are inaccessible to vehicles, drainage channels are often blocked, and heaps of uncollected garbage are scattered everywhere. In addition, insecurity is a big problem and has forced residents to resort to the informal security offered by gangs.
